Viktor Orbán Became Leader of FIDESZ Again
This weekend (April 2006) the 20th Congress of FIDESZ re-elected Viktor Orbán as the leader of the party. Orbán received 88% of the votes, meaning that he is still the unquestioned leader of the biggest Hungarian Conservative party. Although Orbán earlier said that he is taking sole responsibility for losing the 2006 Hungarian elections, and offered his resignation, the party membership apparently expects him to lead FIDESZ in the future.

After the vote, prominent personages of FIDESZ spoke of the reasons behind the lost 2006 election. Orbán announced that in the next months FIDESZ will focus on the regional elections, and will propose a strong alternative to Gábor Demszky in Budapest.

A strange event, although not unlikely from Viktor Orbán, is that on the Congress he quoted from Hitler's Mein Kampf, allegedly to emphasize the policies of MSZP. He said that MSZP is using hatred between classes to eliminate FIDESZ just like the Nazis used hatred between ethnicities. Zoltán Pokorni, another prominent figure of FIDESZ later pointed out that the victory of MSZP in the 2006 elections had shaken the belief in Democracy.

According to later comments from FIDESZ leaders, the quote from Hitler did not create an outrage among the audience, as they understood what Orbán was trying to say.
