Lately there have been news of Croatian authorities moving against illegally constructed buildings throughout the country. Last week, after the inspection of the island of Vir off the Croatian coast, it was revealed that several Hungarian weekend resorts are also affected. These news led to a scandal in Hungary.
Apparently, the Hungarian houses on the island of Vir had been built without proper building certificates. The corporation responsible for the construction and selling of the 18 Hungarian weekend houses on Vir began used the lack of proper legislation in Croatia. With the help of Croatian lawyers, the houses were built and sold to their current owners with the promise of acquiring the building certificate later. Unfortunately, Croatia adopted different laws in the meantime, and now all houses closer than 70 meters to the sea must be pulled down. Besides the 18 Hungarian weekend houses, Croatian, Bosnian and Slovenian properties are also affected. The demolition of the houses should have started this weekend, but in the end the police and the construction workers of the Croatian state allowed the owners to remove the furniture from the houses. The owners are also allowed to pull down their own houses; otherwise they have to pay the cost of the demolition. Latest news state that despite the heavy resistance of the owners, or at least those who had time to travel to Vir, the Hungarian houses have been pulled down on Monday. A local man threatened the police to blow up himself along with the house. On the other hand, the Hungarian owners already admitted that when they purchased the resorts, they knew that they are built illegally; they just did not believe such a thing as destroying them could happen.
