Near to Nagyszeben lies the little town of Vizakna, famed for its salt mines and salt baths. Returning to the main line, we arrive at the ancient town of Medgyes, which is surrounded by ramparts; next at Segesvar, situated amidst delightful scenery. This last town, bathed by the Nagy-Kukullo River, is perhaps the most interesting town in Hungary; the Upper Town, situated on an isolated mountain, presents altogether the aspect of a German city of the Middle Ages, with its rugged bastions and fortress towers, its narrow, winding streets, old Churches, curious belfry, and other memorials of mediaeval architecture. For the rest, the Lower Town harmonises with the Upper, and the beautiful vineyards and orchards surrounding Segesvar, complete the magnificent picture which this city presents.

On the plain of Feheregyhaz, quite close to Segesvar, Alexander Petofi, the celebrated bard of the Hungarian Independence, perished in a battle on the 31st of July 1849. His statue and the commemorative monument of the Russian general Skariatine, shot by order of the Hungarian general Bern, can be seen close to the railway.
