Beyond Nagyvarad the railway enters the beautiful valley of the Rapid Koros, passes Rev, encircles the Kiralyhago and soon enters Transylvania. Banffyhunyad, the first important town, is the centre of the industrial region of Kalotaszeg, which is well-known on account of its beautiful embroidery. Then we reach Kolozsvar the metropolis of Transylvania, and its most active intellectual centre. This important town is the seat of a University and of numerous higher authorities, offices, and institutions. Among its buildings we will mention the large Gothic Cathedral, erected 1396-1442, before which is the splendid monument of Matthias
Corvinus (by John Fadrusz), then the house where this great King was born (now transformed into a museum), the theatre, scientific institutes of every kind, and the magnificent University library. The surroundings of Kolozsvar abound in pretty walks and excursion places.
Further East lies Marosvasarhely, the centre of the Szekely's district. It possesses a beautiful Town-hall, an interesting Museum, a Reformed College, the large Teleki Library, and an ancient Castle, in the Chapel of which, in 1571, the equality of religions was proclaimed. We must also mention the monuments of Louis Kossuth and General Bern, and also a magnificent Park on the island of Elba.
