Hardly an hour from the Lake lies the ancient town of Sopron (Odenburg) an old home of culture; in the Roman epoch it formed an important settlement and in the Middle Ages became a strongly fortified town; its historically and artistically interesting structures the Benedictine Church, and the St. Michaels' Church are beautiful Gothic edifices of the 13th Century; several smaller Churches date from the time of the Romans.

The Inner Town with its ancient houses, the fine Town Hall Square and imposing City Tower present much of interest to the student of art: the newer quarters however, such as the Szechenyi Square with the imposing Casino and neighbouring theatre, the beautifully laid out Deak Square with the very interesting Museum in the "Kulturpalast", and the delightful Kossuth Street are eloquent proofs of the rapid development of this town, which has ever been known as the healthiest and most cultured town of all Hungary.
