The spacious Courtyard of the royal castle recalls the graceful simplicity of the Courts of the XVIII Century. Beautiful sculptures (allegories of War and Peace) decorate this courtyard, against the outer wall of which, stands a splendid work of the Sculptor Alois Strobl. It is the Mathias Fountain, representing a hunting episode of King Mathias Corvinus, which has frequently been sung by Hungarian poets.
The hill-side, which slopes down to the Danube, was converted, through the munificence of King Francis Joseph I into a splendid garden, whose walks and balconies afford delightful views. In the absence of the Court -- which unfortunately is often the case -- the Castle Garden, with the exception of a reserved part, is open to the public. One is never tired of contemplating the splendid panorama of the town, which is particularly beautiful in the evening. But also the garden itself with the mighty Castle and the equestrian statue of Prince Eugen of Savoy (by Joseph Rona), are of great beauty.
