The North West of Hungary is traversed by several railway lines, which connect it with Lower Austria, Moravia and Silesia. The most important of these is that to Vienna, via Marchegg; it runs parallel with the Danube and is the most-used railroad of Hungary. Leaving Budapest by the West Station, the train soon reaches Visegrad, on the Danube, where the mighty stream, confined by wooded hills, breaks through the Hungarian Central Mountains, and forms a beautiful landscape.

We should imagine ourselves transported to the banks of the Rhine but for the lack of traffic and bubbling life. High up on the right bank is the Castle of Visegrad; which under kings, Louis the Great and Mathias Corvin, was the most magnificent residence in Europe; it fell later into ruins, and was finally demolished by Leopold I.

Since then only the Solomon's Tower, so-called because King Solomon was once imprisoned there -- has been in some measure restored. Visegrad is now a popular summer resort of the Budapest public. Further up we see Domos (with the summit of the Dobogoko [700 meters]) the centre of Budapest tourist life.
