A few years ago, an era of social-political reforms was inaugurated at the Town Hall, and the municipalization of different enterprises (gas, electricity, tramways, conveyances, bread-factories etc.), has succeeded not only in rendering excellent service to the citizens, but has also opened new and important sources of revenue to the Municipality. This was all the more necessary and urgent, as the outlays of the Capital since 1874 have increased tremendously; they have risen from 10,000,000, to 85,000,000 crowns.
To be sure the municipal funds have risen in this time from 90.000,000 to 287 000,000 crowns, chiefly through the acquisition and founding of large municipal works. The number of municipal employees (industries and institutes included) amounts now to 13,000, 3,000 of which are teachers and 3,400, government officials. This great organisation is directed from the central borough, by the municipal board and Magistrate. The foundations of the organisation were laid through the above-mentioned law and were partly modified through Statute XXXIII. in the year 1893. A law answering better to the modern requirements, is to be made in the near future.
