The Boulevards and the different principal streets not only facilitate the finding of one's bearings amidst the immense mass of houses in Budapest but also serve to deviate the great traffic of vehicles and trams, which is here extremely dense.

We begin our walk at Vigado Square and Francis Joseph Quay. It is the most beautiful part of the left bank: a quay bordered by splendid buildings and lovely rows of trees, under which on fine summer evenings, strolls an immense crowd of people. The animated Corso and the magnificent panorama of the Danube, dominated by the hills of Buda and Mount Gellert form a picture, which remains unforgotten by all who see it. Southwards the Corso ends in Esku-ter at the end of the Elizabeth Bridge, and by the Parish Church, the oldest Church in Pest: its Chancel dates from the year 1500 and the Baroque facade was constructed in 1726. It was in this Square in the year 1867 that King Francis Joseph took the oath on (he occasion of his Coronation. Retracing our steps we pass Petofi Square, with the Greek Church and the statue (by A. Huszar) of the famous poet Alexander Petofi (killed in the battle of Segesvar 31st July 1849), the bard of Hungarian independence: then come large hotels and luxurious Coffee Houses, the Square and edifice of the Vigado (with large halls for Balls and Concerts), built in a hybrid Roman-Moorish style; a new row of imposing buildings, and lastly the Eotvos Square with the statue (by Huszar) of Baron Joseph Eotvos, statesman and writer. Now we have arrived at Francis Joseph Place.
