Turning now towards Southern Hungary, we soon reach Temesvar. This town, situated on the Bega, is one of the most beautiful towns in Hungary; on account of its modern development, which it owes to its excellent municipal administration, it is called the "Hungarian Dusseldorf". Temesvar consists of several suburbs, divided from each other by the ancient fortifications. The Inner Town contains the large Transylvania Barracks, and the Arsenal, built on the site of the Castle of Hunyadi, (erected in 1442, destroyed in 1849); lastly the Cathedral (18th Century), a fine Theatre, a pretty Museum, and numerous other public buildings. Extensive parks and avenues surround this part of the City. The State grounds lately acquired by the town are now being divided into lots, and a new, modern town is springing up. South West of the Inner Town stretches the beautiful suburb Joseph Town; to the East the Factory Town, and farther still, a suburb of quite agricultural character. Temesvar, with its 72,000 inhabitants, is today one of our most important towns, and the intellectual and agricultural metropolis of the Southern region of the country.
