Higher up on the right bank of the Maros lies Arad, a very active and brisk business town, with a beautiful statue of Liberty by Zala. Not far from here we find the domain of Mezo-hegyes, property of the state, which enjoys a universal reputation as one of the most perfectly organised estates. It was founded by Joseph II in the year 1785, and furnished with a stud, which is still celebrated. Besides these, Hungary possesses three other large studs, belonging to the State; Kisber and Babolna in the county of Komaromi and Fogaras in Transylvania. The number of horses in these four studs amounts to 4127, of which more than half are in Mezohegyes; and it is to these four studs that Hungary owes its excellent horse-breeding. In Kisber the English breed is cultivated, in Babolna the Arab, and in Mezohegyes, the English half-breed, and the Nonius and Gidran breeds. The studs are under the direction of the Ministry of Agriculture, but the organisation is completely military. The remaining branches of cattle breeding are also eagerly pursued; horned cattle sheep and swine are bred in great numbers; lastly important industrial establishments (a sugar-refinery, steam mills and alcohol distilleries) complete this great model exploitation. The whole territory of the Domain is intersected by a network of agricultural railways, and all the most modern tools and machines are here available.
