We have said above, that Hungary numbers 20,886,487 inhabitants. This population comprises 10,050,575 Magyars, 2,949,032 Wallachians, 2,037,435Germans, l,967,970 Slovaks, 1,833,162 Croatians, 1,106,471 Servians, 472,587 Ruthenes, and 469,255 of diverse nationality.
In 1911, Hungary numbered more than 18,000 elementary schools, with 36,000 teachers, 515 superior elementary schools, 267 secondary schools, two universities, and a large number of special schools, among which are 64 agricultural schools, 162 industrial and commercial schools, 53 art schools, and 13 midwifery schools etc.
The starting-point of the political evolution of Hungary, was the national awakening at the commencement of the 19th Century; of late years, the State has given an impulse to the industrial production, which has terminated in excellent results. The industrial population, at the last census, amounted to more than 1,200,000; the greatest manufacturing towns are Budapest, Pressburg, Gyor, Temesvar, Fiume, and Agram.
At the same time the Hungarians are an agricultural people; more than two-thirds of the active population are attached to the different branches of agriculture. There are in this country, 13,015,295 hectares of meadow land, 325,997 hectares of vineyards, 2,045,528 hectares of pasturage, and 4,268,859 hectares of forests etc.
