The rapid development of Budapest has in the last decade totally changed the aspect of the town. Great streets have been opened, new quarters have sprung up, and thousands and thousands of buildings and large tenement houses have been erected. In order to get a general view of the town we must take a walk round it.
A favourable starting-point is the bank of the Danube by the Suspension Bridge. We stand by the mighty stream and have before us, one of the most glorious panoramas that any town could offer. This great river flows majestically through the heart of the city; large steamers and small ferry-boats hurry from bank to bank, on the lower quays and landing-places is a continuous loading and unloading of merchandise, and thousands of pedestrians wander along the tree-planted upper quays. It is a hurry and bustle quite unique, and characteristic of Budapest.
