The centre of the Upper Hungarian Mountains is formed by the High and the Low Tatra, two parallel chains. These mountains, separated by the high valley of the Vag, extend like mighty bastions, from West to East, and form the frontier of the County of Lipto, on the North and South. The valley of the Vag gradually ascends towards the East, and forms, not far from Csorba, at an altitude of 898 meters, the Watershed of the Vag, the Poprad and the Hernad. This part is of great geographical importance, for it marks the boundary between the basins of the Danube and the Oder, that is to say, of the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea.
The mountains that are grouped round this important point are called the Central Carpathians, and it is the Kaschau-Oderberg railway, which has opened and made accessible, this most beautiful district of Hungary.
