On Saturday (May 2006) Hungarian tourists were arrested in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. This is a story of two sides, and while the Hungarian media tried to protect the Hungarian tourists, apparently they were in violation with the Slovak laws.
The incident, resulting in the arrest of three Hungarians, occurred when the teacher of a Hungarian high school started to tell the story of the Coronation Dome of Bratislava to his students. A local tour guide, recognizing that the Hungarian man is effectively 'guiding' his group around in the Dome, called the police, who arrested the teacher. A similar incident occurred at the same time at another point of Bratislava. A third Hungarian was also arrested for pushing the Slovak guide earlier, when he, allegedly, insulted the Hungarian group. As reported by the Hungarian media, the Slovak police treated the Hungarians rather harshly, made them wait for hours at the police station, and only the Hungarian Consul of Bratislava could speed up the process. Arriving back to Hungary, the teacher expressed his astonishment over the events and said that he believes that the Slovak police violated their rights. The other side of the story, reported by Index, a Hungarian news portal on Monday, is that there is a law against unauthorized tour guiding in almost every European country, including Slovakia, and, for example, Hungary too. The laws are different in every country, but it is easily possible that in Slovakia a teacher guiding his students is in violation of them.
