Hungarian Church of Scientology to Sue Ombudsman
One of the Hungarian ombudsmen, Attila Péterfalvi was threatened with a lawsuit by the Hungarian branch of the Church of Scientology. Péterfalvi, Data Protection Commissioner of Hungary, has recently investigated the activity of scientologists in Hungary, and found many unnerving issues. On the other hand, the Church of Scientology claims that Péterfalvi, responsible for the proper treatment and protection of data regarding Hungarian citizens, has gone too far when he addressed the Church with his recommendations.

Péterfalvi said that there were major legal concerns regarding the statement scientologists ask people to sign when joining the Church. By signing this document, the "preclear" (the follower of the Church of Scientology) resigns, once and for all, his rights related to the data collected about him during the confessions. According to the ombudsman, such a resignation is invalid under Hungarian legislation, and since the data collected about the "preclear" could be very personal and intimate, the signing of such a statement should not be required. Péterfalvi also expressed his concern about the e-meter, the device scientologists use to find the problematic areas during the confession, as the contraption could also function as a lie detector. According to Hungarian laws, such devices are only allowed to be used by the police, and only under strict restrictions.

The Church of Scientology now plans to sue the Péterfalvi for trying to influence the life of the Church. The leader of the Hungarian branch of the Church said that the state has no right to directly tell what methods should or should not be employed for the cause of the religion. As a reply, Péterfalvi said that the Church of Scientology, originating from the United States, should try to change its customs and methods so they fit into the boundaries of European, and, in particular, Hungarian legislation.
