Desert in Hungary
Hungary has a diverse landscape. From the lowlands in the middle of the country to the mountains in the north there are all kinds of geographical formations. And, according experts, in a few decades a new desert may further diversify the landscape, causing a number of economic problems. The middle part of Hungary, the great plain between the Danube and Tisza rivers has been a problematic area for over a hundred years. Even István Széchenyi, back in the middle of the 19th century recognized the problem caused by the lack of rain in this area. In 2003 FAO classified the territory between the two major rivers as "half-desert" and called for action to prevent further desiccation. The solution was evident even for Széchenyi in the 1840's; a canal must be built connecting the Danube and the Tisza. Although Széchenyi himself pushed through a law in the Hungarian Diet in favor of the project, the canal has never been built. Experts estimate the total cost of the construction to reach HUF 500 billion (EUR 1.9 billion). Currently, the project is in the phase of planning, and the actual works will not be included in the regional development plan of the area for the next 8 years. Depending on the pathway of the canal, the construction could take several years. It is said that only instant action could prevent this agriculturally important area from becoming a desert by the middle of the 21st century. While it would make the Hungarian landscape richer, the desertation of the lowlands between the Danube and the Tisza could severely affect food production, causing serious problems for the people who live in this area.
